michael_veltri.pngMorning Keynote Speaker - Michael Veltri
Michael Veltri is a leadership expert, battle-hardened business executive, and Nationwide Bestselling author. Recognizing that success in business and life is created by the daily decisions we make, Michael elevates teams, fuel-injects leadership, and improves business performance through better decision-making practices.

Afternoon Keynote Speaker - Kenneth G. Brown, Ph.D. Kenneth_g_brown.jpg
Ken Brown is Ralph L. Sheets Professor of Management and Associate Dean in the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa. He also holds a complimentary appointment in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, University of Iowa. Brown has served as a Fulbright Specialist at Seoul National University and a visiting professor at Monash and Deakin Universities in Melbourne, Australia. He received a B.S. from University of Maryland College Park (1993) and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University (1999). 

Ken has published numerous articles related to management learning and leadership. His articles have appeared in leading management journals including Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, and Decision Science. He edited the Cambridge Handbook for Workplace Training and Employee Development, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Academy of Management Learning and Education. He is an elected fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, American Psychological Association, and Association of Psychological Science.

Ken has won numerous teaching awards including the President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence, which represents the highest level of achievement in teaching given at the University of Iowa. His Great Courses lectures on “Influence: Mastering Life’s Greatest Skill” have been sold all over the world. His textbook (coauthored with Greg Stewart) is published by Wiley and is titled, “Human Resource Management: Linking Strategy to Practice.” Ken also consults with both for-profit and non-profit organizations on strategic planning and the strategic use of employee learning and development.

Leo Bertling has been PMP since Jan. 1997 and is a longtime member of the Eastern Iowa PMI chapter. He is currently employed by Pearson as a Manager in the Forecasting and Planning Group heading a database tools development team. 

His background which includes writing technical documentation, designing and conducting training classes, installation planning, onsite/telephone support for field techs and sales staff, flight training and search and rescue incident management.

Michael Perdunn is a project manager, teacher, and speaker. He is leading OPPD's cybersecurity team through the vital job of protecting Omaha's electrical grid. Michael also consults with local companies on their cyber security effectiveness, facilitates training and development programs in project management, change management and team building, and is an instructor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

He earned a Master’s degree in Communications as well as Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) certifications.

Outside of work, Michael is active in the community as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) working with children in the child welfare system. Growing up in the UK, Michael became an avid soccer fan and still plays and coaches whenever he gets the chance.

Apollo Root Cause Analysis - A brief review of the 5 Why and Ishikawa diagrams. Then discuss why Apollo is very effective when the issues can manifest themselves through complex process chains. Breakout exercise for session participants on how to put an Apollo RCA together.

Business devotes a lot of energy to problem solving. For the issue at hand, the Holy Grail is to find THE ROOT CAUSE. To find THAT ONE THING that caused the problem. Problem identification will be straightforward at times.

A complex, intertwined work flow involving many people and departments can make problem identification difficult.

Now picture yourself being called to a meeting to review a costly problem. The issue is significant, equipment has been damaged and the production schedule is way behind. During the opening of the meeting, the leader says finding the “The Root Cause” is not the main concern. The meeting attendees all turn to look at the leader. This meeting is starting like no other problem-solving meeting you’ve been asked to attend.
