Presenter:  Norma Jean Havlik-Smith

NormaJean HavlekSmithNorma Jean Havlik-Smith was born, raised, and pursued her educational endeavors in Illinois until 2013 when she fell in love with an amazing Iowan. She first fell in love with her partner but after moving to Iowa fell in love with the people and hospitality of Iowa and as of 2013 is a full-time Iowan.

Norma earned her Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication and Human Relations (minoring in Women Studies and Human Resources) and Master of Arts in Communication Studies. Norma continues to pursue her communication and leadership passions through continuing education opportunities as well as through her love of Toastmasters. Norma has served in Toastmasters as a general member, Vice President of Membership, Secretary, and is currently serving as an Area Director within Cedar Rapids.

Most of her career path has been spent in student services and academics as an Academic Advisor, Dean of Students, Faculty Training Manager, Faculty Development Coach, Director of Student Services, and now serves her community through Kirkwood Community College as a Workforce Career Consultant. She works with the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and the GAP Tuition Assistance programs to help Iowans develop their skills and to help fulfill workforce needs.

She claims to be a fun loving organizer and planner and was accepted as a break-out session co-presenter in 2017 for the Kirkwood Community College “Beyond Rubies” conference. She co-presented 2 sessions on how to stay relevant through our ages and finding planner peace. In 2018, she again was accepted as a break-out leader and will be presenting on her own about creating a unique style of resume that will give attendees a leg-up with their competition in the job search, annual review, promotion, and future life pursuits.

On a personal note, Norma can be seen spending her time watching movies, riding a motorcycle, traveling, planning and organization, helping her community, and living up to her favorite quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Life is a Journey and Not a Destination,” and “It’s the Climb,” by Miley Cyrus.

If you would ask her what her tag line would be…. “Live Every Moment, Laugh Every Day, and Love Beyond Words.”
