Reaching the South Pole through the lens of the PMBOK

Ways of Working

Before there was project management, there were projects.

  • Whaling

  • Polar exploration

  • The Lewis & Clark expedition

  • Transcontinental railroads

  • Military campaigns like taking elephants over the Alps

As winter looms, this presentation will discuss two contrasting methodologies that both resulted in the attainment of the South Pole in 1911-1912. Planning choices will be explored in relation to PMBOK project stages.

In Oslo, Norway, Margo visited the Fram Museum (frammuseum.no) and fell headfirst down the rabbit hole of learning about early 20th-century Polar exploration. She is looking forward to sharing some of the history of the first expeditions to reach the South Pole, focusing on the different planning and execution of each attempt.
